The Salida ADA Living Unit

We began looking for a builder when we moved to Salida in March of 2020—right after Colorado shut down for COVID-19.
The next nine months were spent locating local builders and trying to contact them to discuss our new home build. I would call, leave a message, and if they called back, immediately follow up. We had a meeting, we discussed the budget and Scope of Work, it sounded interesting, but then nothing.
Two builders met with us and then ghosted us—no follow up email or voice message. Presumably, they weren’t interested in the project, but we spent months learning that. I saw Sonny’s ad in the Mountain Mail and gave him a call. I left a message and received a call back shortly thereafter.
We talked briefly and set up a site meeting for a few days later. We met as planned and reviewed the budget and the Scope of Work. He explained that he worked on projects for Time & Materials and needed an earnest money deposit to start reviewing the drawings and begin pricing the work.
We made an agreement and started finalizing the drawings for pricing and the building permit. During construction, Sonny took care of the site to carefully time deliveries to deal with the small available space. The crew regularly removed scraps, boxes and waste so the site was safe to walk as the Client with our grandson. Since some materials weren’t available during the COVID period that we built, many details had to be to deal with the changing situation in the world.
As an architect, it was a pleasure to work with Sonny to sort out details and clarify building assemblies.
As the Owner, it is a pleasure to own and live in the completed Accessory Dwelling Unit. Many thanks!
